It has been a long time since I had an opportunity to run a live blog. I used to do them all the time for work when I was a local news journalist, but in my current role there is not as much need.
Time was, everything from an accident closing the motorway, to a fire at a house in the area, would throw me headlong into the world of live coverage, to keep the Surrey Mirror’s coverage fully up to day. Possibly unsurprisingly, there is not as much call for that sort of rolling coverage of breaking news in the luxury and travel retail sectors, which are where I operate these days.
But that all changed at the end of last week. The fire which caused a power outage at Heathrow Airport gave me the chance to play with live blogs once more. This mostly meant scrambling to pick up the latest updates from the London Fire Brigade and the Met Police, while chucking in any colour or photos I could find.
It is not a vintage piece of work, but it was good to be back in the saddle. Unfortunately, the digital team at DFNI have taken it off the website now the story is closed, so I am posting it here for my own posterity.
What’s the point in having your own corner of the internet if you can’t put what you want on there?
Heathrow Closure – Live Blog
